The BioBase4SME (Interreg NWE) and SuperBio (H2020) projects both set-up and managed voucher schemes for SMEs and start-ups active in the circular bio-economy to access innovation support services.  During this dinner debate, the main merits of these SME-friendly vouchers schemes will be discussed and demonstrated, e.g.:

  • Access for SMEs and start-ups to a unique and enormous European network of bio-economy and innovation experts
  • The set-up of many innovative cross-border value chains
  • A significant TRL (Technology Readiness Level) increase of the biobased innovations the companies were working on.
  • …

Furthermore, both projects assessed the hurdles and bottlenecks SMEs and start-ups encounter when trying to get innovative products and processes to the market and distilled several policy recommendations out of these analyses which will also be presented during the dinner debate.

Join us for this dinner debate and find out how essential transnational cooperation is for innovative European SMEs and start-ups and how policy could support international cooperation between businesses.

    Pfaltzgraff, Lucie

    Senior Consultant working on the H2020 funded SuperBIO project

    After acquiring her first degree in Chemistry at the University of Strasbourg in France, Lucie received her PhD at the University of York following a MSc in Green Chemistry and Sustainable Clean Technology from the same University. Through her thesis she gained specific expertise in the field of clean technology, specifically hydrothermal microwave conversion and extraction technology. During her PhD, she became closely involved with the EU COST Action on food waste valorisation for sustainable chemicals, materials and fuels. She is currently a senior consultant at NNFCC The Bioeconomy Consultants, a firm providing strategic business consultancy aiming to de-risk the bioeconomy sector. She works on the H2020 funded SuperBIO Coordination & Support Action. SuperBIO is an innovation project funded by the H2020 call Cluster facilitated projects for new value chains (Innosup 2015-1) managed by the Executive Agency for SMEs. The project is aimed at SMEs with a concrete strategic vision to build new industrial value chains by integrating and supporting groups of SMEs in collaboration with other innovation actors across Europe. She acts as a point of contact for SMEs in the UK, working with them to find partnering organisation in Europe and delivers innovation support services to SMEs (i.e. regulatory landscape overview, market research, techno-economic evaluation and business plan review).

    CEO Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant

    Prof. Wim Soetaert holds a degree in chemical and biochemical engineering and did a PhD in bioengineering at Ghent University. Prof. Wim Soetaert currently heads the Centre of Expertise for Industrial Biotechnology and Biocatalysis (InBio.be) at Ghent University, Faculty of BioScience Engineering. InBio is active in the areas of industrial biotechnology, biocatalysis, fermentation science and engineering and counts about 40 people. www.inbio.be He is the founder and chairman of Ghent Bio-Economy Valley, a public private partnership to promote the development of biobased activities in the Ghent area in Belgium. Since its creation in 2005, Ghent Bio-Energy Valley has quickly grown into one of the main growth centers for the biobased economy in Europe, with over 500 Million euros already invested in the port of Ghent. www.gbev.org Prof. Wim Soetaert is also the director of the Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant, an open innovation Pilot Plant for biobased products and processes based in Ghent.     Dr. Els Van de Velde has several years of experience in managing research and innovation policy related projects and studies. She has extensive experience with innovation policies on national and European level, and with funding opportunities for R&D and innovation. As a project leader, she has lead several studies related to key enabling technologies (KETs) and value chain analyses. She currently acts as network manager of the Vanguard Nanotechnology Pilot and offers expert support for the thematic smart specialisation platform on Energy and Agri-food, the smart specialisation cooperation in Central Europe, and the pilot action of Sustainable Buildings and High Tech Farming. The expert support is targeted at supporting the development of a cross-regional partnership for co-investment. Prior to joining IDEA Consult, her professional research experience focused on technological innovation. Els has a PhD in Applied Economics, at the Ghent University. She holds a master degree in civil engineering. She has advanced skills in qualitative and quantitative analysis, evaluation of European policies, survey set-up and implementation, and business development.
